Scoop from the Coop

Yesterday, this was the home of our Buff Orpington chickens.  Although this flock is rather new (Jan, 2011) this chicken tractor has been in commission for quite some time;  it was time to treat these ladies (and 1 rooster) to some luxury living.  After many hours of hard work our Cadillac Chicken Tractor has been unveiled.

Equipped with handles and wheels the tractor is easily moved to a fresh new plot of bugs and grass daily.

A view from the peaceful nesting box looking out into the coop. This is Mama with her chicks. Mama raised her chicks well, she even taught them to find the juiciest tomatoes!

At 2 1/2 months old, the chicks are now in their adolescence.  Ah, the teenage years.

Speaking of chicks,  Diamonds, one of our bantam Americanas, is playing mom.  She is setting on a nest of 10 eggs in the barns nesting box.  Although she is small, she is practicing all of the motherly instincts like keeping the eggs turned and warm.

Diamonds only leaves her nest to get a bite to eat in the morning.

We outfitted the barn with a remote chicken door. Our chickens put themselves to bed before dark so this allows us to close the barn up to protect from pesky predators.

This duck is a female Rouen.  We raised her and her sister since they were ducklings. They have now feathered out and have beautiful saphire speculum feathers on their wings.

After breakfast on these hot days the ducks all waddle to the creek to keep cool.  In the evenings they always come back home to the barn.We hope that you have enjoyed hearing the Scoop from the Coop and that you are enjoying the delicious eggs that these ladies are delivering to us.  We work hard to provide them the best living conditions and food needed to nourish you and your family.
